MRU Test Results and a Plan Going Forward

(Sporting her Eagles shirt on a Sunday afternoon)

Thank you for praying for accurate test results as well as for wisdom and discernment for the doctor/surgeon. Alex and I met with Dr. Carr, Alexandria's Urologists at CHOP, yesterday afternoon to go over the MRU test results. Dr. Carr showed me some of the images on a computer screen and I was amazed at the technology! The pictures were in 3D AND you could rotate and turn them any way you want! This is most definitely a much more definitive test then the previous tests Alex had done in the past. From the MRU images we could clearly see an obstruction half way down the urethra in the left kidney. Alex will not outgrow this obstruction and so we are looking at yet another surgery for Alex. Without the surgery the pressure of the excess urine Alexandria's left kidney is holding due to the obstruction will overtime damage Alexandria's kidney or even cause kidney failure. During the surgery the "bad" portion of the urethra will be cut out and the healthy ends will be sown together. Aside from all the basic risks associated with surgery and anesthesia there is 1% risk that the obstruction in the urethra could come back again in the spot where it originally was. Obviously 1% is a very low number - thank God! Please pray that Alex would not fall in that 1% ratio as well as for her protection, safety, the surgeon, all the equipment, all the techs and nurses, successful surgery and fast healing. Please also pray for Alexandria's health - Alex can not have a cold, a fever, sneezing, coughing, etc. If she gets sick or is not feeling feel too close to the surgery date we will have to reschedule the surgery and it takes a few months to get in again. This will be the last surgery from all the medical issues we had to address since Alexandria's birth. A part of me is relieved to just finally fix the kidney and move on with our lives. Another part of me is sad that my baby will have to endure yet another surgery...and go through the healing process associated with it again. Alex will have yet another incision (scar) on her belly...This will be her 3rd one on the belly not to mention the scar on her back from the PDA ligation. For a boy this is not such a big deal but for a teenage girl or a woman...Well, we will deal with this minor issue when we get there. After this procedure while, Alex is still under anesthesia, the surgeon who placed Alexandri'a Mic-Key button will come in and cut out all the granulation tissue around the Alex's stoma. Alex continues to have a problem with granulation tissue and nothing seems to help - not even 2 silver nitrite treatments...This means that the surgery date needs to be coordinated between 2 surgeons. Dr. Carr's first available surgery date is December 28th. The scheduler will contact Dr. Nance's office to see if he is available that day and if not what dates in January we can coordinate for the 2 surgeons to be present. I would love it if we could get in the first week of January....but really, I want it to be God's timing and way. Thank you for your prayers.

P.S. Alex weighs 20.5 lbs and measures 19 3/4 inches in length! :) We continue to do our feeding exercises and are waiting for an available Child Psychologist to takes us on every 2 weeks. According to the waiting list this will happen sometime in mid-December. We are now transitioning Alex from a preemie formula to a formula called Nutren Junior. She is tolerating it well so far. We see the G.I. Nutritionist every 4 weeks to makes sure all is well and incorporate appropriate changes. I am getting more used to traveling with Alex and her feeding equipment...which makes my life much easier. :)
